1st Year B’nei Mitzvah Class

To learn about the High Holidays & Hachnasat Orchim (Welcoming guests), we are... 

  • Doing an activity with toothpaste and playing group games to reflect on how our words impact people, and discussing how we can make sure to have a positive impact on people in the upcoming year.

  • Making collages that represent the significance of the High Holidays to us. 

  • Hearing shofar sounds and doing a group “shofar blasts” activity to learn the four types of shofar blasts.

  • Making skits – with a twist – that showcase Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur customs.

  • Practicing the four steps to hospitality.

  • Learning about Biblical characters who we welcome spiritually to our sukkah each year.

  • Discovering that hospitality is a Jewish value.

5th Grade: Thinking about Jewish Role Models

To learn about famous Jewish icons, we are...

  • Playing an interactive game to answer questions about our role models and the people we look up to. 

  • Playing matching games with information and pictures of famous Jewish icons, and learning about their contributions to the world. 

  • Envisioning and drawing a life-size leader based on the Jewish icons that we learned about.

4th Grade: Discovering Jewish Icons

To learn about famous Jewish icons, we are….

  • Identifying famous Jewish figures and their varied contributions to society in the many fields. For example, Albert Einstein in science and Daniel Radcliffe in entertainment.

  • Playing a matching game in which we try to match Jewish figures with their accomplishments.

  • Creating our own life sized Jewish Icon!

3rd Grade: Learning about the Jewish Calendar

To learn about the Jewish calendar, we are…

  • Playing a jeopardy game about the moon phases after hearing some facts about lunar months (since the Jewish calendar is a lunar-based calendar).  

  • Discussing how the holiday Rosh Chodesh – which happens the first day of every Jewish month – is traditionally celebrated, and where it comes from. 

  • Making yummy "moon treats" with oreos to review the different phases of the moon.

  • Can you name at least one customs we partake in to commemorate Rosh Chodesh?

  • What the moon looks like at the beginning of a new Jewish month?
