Purim!

This week we began our unit on Purim. We discussed the significance of the holiday of Purim, its customs and rituals. We contextualized the story of Purim in terms of religious freedom and focused on understanding the lengths that Esther went through to keep her Jewish identity. We understood that the story of Purim is read from the Megillah, the book of Esther, and had fun acting out the story during Z’man Kehila (community time) and Nishnushim (snack).

To dive deeper into our Purim peulot we participated in an array of fun activities:

  • Read the book “The Queen who Saved her People” with our special Grandparent guest reader Maurice Shemper

  • Danced and sang to a series of fun camp songs that wove Jewish identity into the lyrics with our special guest Hannah Zale, popular jewish musician and In the City Camp community outreach coordinator and songleader

  • Acted out the roles of Queen Esther, Mordecai, Haman, King Ahasuerus and Queen Vashti while reading “The Story of Esther- a Purim Tale”

  • Created our very own Purim masks with an array of pom poms, feathers and stickers to wear at our JKG Purim Talent Show on Monday
