Hosting a JKG Shabbatluck

A few times a year, JKG families get together in each other's homes for informal Shabbat potlucks - we like to call them Shabbatlucks!

These gatherings are a sweet way to end a long week. Kids build deeper friendships outside of the classroom, and parents connect with each other over a glass of wine.

Below is a basic guide to hosting a Shabbatluck for your child's JKG class.

STEP ONE

Choose a Date, Time, & Place

Choose any date and time that works for you. Shabbatlucks can be a Friday night dinner, a Saturday brunch, a Sunday afternoon lunch - it's up to you!

If you're concerned about fitting lots of people in your home, we can cap the guest list at a certain number of families. Standing room only is perfectly fine - you don't need to plan to fit everyone sitting around a dining room table.

You also have the option to host in a public space, like at a park or playground.

STEP TWO

Make a Plan

The JKG team will guide you through this whole process, so don't worry if it’s your first time hosting!

The JKG Director will send out an invitation to the families in your child's class, which includes a potluck dish sign-up sheet.

Decide what you're going to cook as a host. Hosts usually provide an entree, but will not provide the whole meal. Monitor the potluck sign-up list to make sure there's a good variety of dishes being brought.

STEP THREE

Welcome Families

Welcome families into your home for the Shabbatluck! Having nametags is an easy way to help everyone get to know each other.

If your family has a custom of lighting candles and saying a blessing over wine and challah on Shabbat, you're welcome to lead it for the group. If your family likes to high five and say "it's finally Friday!" you can do that too! We want your Shabbatluck to feel natural and authentic to your family’s culture.

That’s it. Enjoy your time together. Shabbat Shalom!
