When is JKG Afterschool?

JKG Afterschool runs Monday-Thursday (2:30-6:00pm) and Fridays (2:30-5:00pm) throughout the school year.

Afterschool is not in session on days when schools are closed including Thanksgiving break, winter break, spring break, teacher work days, and other national holidays. JKG offers full-day camps on most of these days. JKG Afterschool Community observes Jewish religious holidays and is closed on major Jewish holidays such as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

What does a typical day look like at JKG Afterschool?

Each day includes playground time, Hebrew, and experiential Jewish learning. We have a playscape featuring a Jewish educational garden, and a team of fun-loving teachers who make learning ridiculously cool.

Interwoven into each day at JKG Afterschool Community are elements of the arts, including drama, fine art, music, movement such as yoga and sports, and gardening. We are also proud to offer a curriculum that focuses on teaching Jewish values and ethics, like Tzedakah (charity), Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), Kehila (community) and Hakaret Hatov (gratitude).

Friday at JKG is all about Shabbat. Students make challah, learn prayers, practice Shabbat and Havdallah rituals, and do art and movement activities that focus on the themes of Shabbat: rest, gratitude, and togetherness.

Billing for JKG transportation is separate from tuition. We pick up students from select area schools depending on the JKG location. If you are interested in JKG picking up from your child’s school, please reach out to us. Schools we currently pick up from:

    • JKG Morningside: Springdale Park, Morningside, Morningside Kindergarten Center, Mary Lin, Winnona Park, 4/5 Academy, Oakhurst, Westchester, Clairemont, Hess Academy, and Paideia

    • JKG Brookhaven: Cliff Valley, Briar Vista, and Sagamore Hills

Details and Policies about our Vehicles:

  • Our Mini-Vans: JKG owns Honda Odyssey 8-passenger mini-vans, and we follow the child safety laws around transporting children. We require any student ages 7 and under to ride in a booster seat. For students 8+, parents indicate on the enrollment form whether or not they would like their children to ride in a booster seat. If your child requires a car seat, we ask that parents install it into the JKG van in advance of their first day at JKG.

  • Our Multi-Function School Activity Bus (MFSAB): JKG also owns an awesome 14-passenger Multi-Function School Activity Bus. This bus is small enough that it does not require our drivers to have Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDL), and big enough that students ages 5+ do not require a booster seat or car seat to ride safely in the vehicle. Students are always required to wear seat belts. We do not allow children under age 5 to ride in our MFSAB.

  • Our Drivers: The vans and bus are driven by JKG Afterschool Community staff members who are licensed, insured, and have a clean driving record.

JKG Bus/Van Behavior

Students are expected to enter and exit the bus and van in a timely manner, to wear a seat belt at all times, to be respectful to the other students and driver, and follow any instructions given by the driver. If a student is unable to meet these expectations, we follow a three-strike system:

  • First: The student will receive a verbal warning from the JKG staff member and parents will be notified.

  • Second: If the problem continues, parents will be notified by the Afterschool Community Director.

  • Third: If the problem persists, students will lose van/bus privileges for the following two afterschool days.

Make Up Days
When JKG is closed due to Jewish holidays or inclement weather on a day a student regularly attends, the student may drop in for a "make up" day with 24 hrs notice to the Afterschool Director.

Illness

  • Fever: Students must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to JKG Afterschool.

  • Lice: Children with head lice may not attend JKG Sunday Program, JKG Afterschool Community, or JKG events. This policy is for the safety and health of all JKG students and team. Inclement Weather

Lost and Found
JKG is not responsible for items left at Afterschool including books, homework, clothing, projects, etc. Please label your student’s belongings (coats, jackets, lunchboxes, water bottles, backpacks) with his/her name and phone number. All items are placed in a central location in JKG Afterschool’s office. Please pick up items during JKG Afterschool Community hours (2:45-6 pm).

Medication
If your child needs a dose of a prescription medication during JKG, notify the Afterschool Director and complete a Medical Authorization Form. Over the counter medication is not dispensed without a doctor’s written authorization. All medication should be given to the Afterschool Director to ensure proper usage. Children are not permitted to dispense their own medication at JKG.

Pick Up & Late Fee
JKG Afterschool closes at 6:00pm Mon-Thurs and at 5:00pm on Friday. You may notify us that your child will be picked up early, but we cannot guarantee s/he will be ready to leave when you arrive. Beginning at 6:05pm (M-Th)/5:05pm (F) a late fee of $10 per child will be automatically charged plus an additional $5 for every 5 minutes thereafter.

Safety
JKG Afterschool is equipped with a first aid kit and all team members are CPR/First Aid Certified. In case of emergency, illness, or injury to a child, the parent or guardian is notified immediately. If the parents/guardian cannot be reached immediately, the emergency numbers on the registration form are called.

In the event of an emergency warranting medical attention or considered life threatening, the Afterschool Director calls 911. Parents or emergency contacts are contacted as well.

Homework
JKG dedicates 30 minutes each day to homework, studying, and reading time. During this time, JKG teachers and counselors will assist students with daily homework and encourage students to check their work and make corrections. JKG can provide basic art supplies including crayons, markers, paper, pencils, scissors, and glue, but cannot provide other supplies such as poster board. JKG is unable to accommodate computer homework at this time. Parents are welcome to send kids to JKG with a laptop or tablet to complete computer homework. If students have not finished their homework in the 30 minute allotted time, we encourage them to do so later in the day.

Taking a Break from JKG
JKG may ask a student to take a break from JKG on the basis of aggressive behavior, inappropriate behavior, and/or threats. These days off are based on the severity and details of each situation. The longevity of the break is up to the discretion of the JKG Leadership Team.

If the aggressive behavior, inappropriate behavior, and/or threats continue, further action is up to the discretion of the JKG Leadership Team. This includes, but is not limited to, a longer break from JKG, different types of interventions, expulsion from the program, etc.
