  • Taking a trip to the JF&CS Kosher Food Pantry and touring their space.
  • Meeting a leader at JF&CS and hearing about different initiatives their organization works on. 
  • Sorting food for the pantry and experiencing giving back to the Atlanta Jewish community first hand.

  • Ask your student: What is one thing you learned about JF&CS? What is the purpose of the Kosher food pantry? 

5th grade – europe in the 1940's

To learn about what life was like for Jews in 1940's Europe, we are...
  • Reviewing what we learned last week about the Great Depression and how Hitler used Jews as a scapegoat for economic challenges.
  • Watching a video about "Kristallnacht" – the Night of Broken Glass – to understand how this sentiment escalated into discrimination against Jews.  
  • Discussing the power of propaganda, and practicing distinguishing between fake headlines and real headlines.
  • Looking at Nazi propaganda posters to understand how Hitler convinced the public that the Jews were bad.
  • Reading stories and looking at pictures of the Warsaw ghetto, and discussing what it would be like if we had to live like that now.

  • Ask your student: How were Jews treated differently during World War II? What is propaganda?

4th grade – immigrating to the united states

To learn about Jewish immigration to the United States in the 1800s, we are...
  • ​Simulating aspects of the Pale of Settlement – like being cramped together – to remind us why Jews would feel a need to leave Europe.
  • Reading a passage written by a young girl in the Pale of Settlement about the difficulties she faced trying to come to the United States.
  • Simulating the hardships of leaving the Pale of Settlement with an obstacle course full of difficult questions about Judaism, Russia, and America.

  • Ask your student: What did it feel like to try to get to America? Do you think life was easy once they got to America? What might have been some things that made life hard here?

3rd grade – avoiding embarrassing others 

To learn about the Jewish value of "Halbanat Panim" – avoiding embarrassing someone – we are...
  • Doing an activity to demonstrate that you can never really take mean words back – and that they have a big impact on other people.
  • Giving our classmates compliments and praises to build them up, instead of tearing them down with negativity and embarrassment.
  • Learning a tools for how to avoid embarrassing someone, and becoming "Halbanat Panim Warriors".
  • Discussing how to handle times when we feel embarrassed.

  • Learning about different ways to give tzedakah – from donating to volunteering to raising awareness.
  • Choosing a charitable organization and putting on a skit for our class about what that organization does. 
  • Decorating tzedakah boxes to collect money for an organization that we want to support.
