שבת שלום JKG Community! This week we started a ridiculously cool new unit on the Jewish value of Tzaar Baalei Chayim (treatment of animals). Our students learned that according to Jewish law we should feed our pets before we feed ourselves AND that we should make sure that working animals (like those on a farm) should always be paired with an animal of equal size--so that animals aren't carrying too much or too little at a time.
Check out our Tzaar Baalei Chayim acitivites below! This week we made a public service announcement for our friends, baked cookies with a vegan twist, and learned about service animals in a seeing-eye dog obstacle course!
We want all our friends and family to know how important it is to be kind to animals, so we made our own PSA. JKG students wrote their own script and directed themselves!
Our JKG chefs made vegan chocolate chip cookies! You can ask your little chef what special ingredients we included (or left out!) to make them animal friendly!
Everyone got a chance to make and taste their own cookie!
We learned a lot about the ways animals can help us. Here, we had a service dog obstacle course!
Check back with us next week as we continue learning about tzaar baalei chayim!
Our JKG Afterschool Community students welcomed family and friends into the סוכה (sukkah, shelter) for our celebration last night. Sukkot is known as the "Feast of Tabernacles" and honors the journey of the Israelites as they wandered through the desert for forty years, living in temporary shelters. Sukkot gatherings are very festive and joyous, also honoring the harvest season. At JKG we celebrated by decorating the space, welcoming our family and friends for a pizza party, and shaking the lulav and etrog.
Happy Sukkot from JKG!
JKG kids loved adding their Sukkot crafts to our beautiful Sukkah!
JKG students had the opportunity to shake the lulav and etrog (palm branches and citrus fruit native to Israel). We shake it in each of the four directions (north, south, east, west) and up and down as a way to signify G-d's presence is everywhere.
