We started off the week with a surprise baby shower for Teacher Andrea! It was also her last day before her new baby is delivered! The JKG team is so happy for Andrea and her growing family!
We had so much fun playing with balloons, cupcakes, goldfish and the kids gave Andrea lovely advice for becoming a new mom. The JKG kids are really the sweetest.. and the cutest!
LET IT SNOW!
We are happy that everyone had a safe and fun time in the snow. The JKG playground still had some snow to play with. Strike a pose!
JKG Annual Hanukkah Party
Enjoy this sneak peak of pictures from the Hanukkah party! It was a huge success and we thank everyone who came!
Welcome Back to the JKG BLog!
This week at JKG we focused on Tikkun Olam, a jewish concept defined by acts of kindness performed to perfect or repair the world. We talked about ways we can help respect the environment in our own community like:
Throwing away trash
Helping at a soup kitchen
Donating clothes to a charity
We love Ivrit (Hebrew) lessons! Do you know your Hebrew letters? We do!
There are many ways we learned how to help out the world this week. One way was venturing into the world of planting! The JKG community has been working on decorative plant holders! They got super creative while using colored paper, gems, and more! Soon, they will use these holders to grow their own plants!
Rebecca's Tent CARE PACKAGES
Rebecca’s Tent is a Jewish-run women’s shelter. Their goal is to help women who may be homeless or struggling in some other way, so we decided to lend a helping hand! The JKG community made care packages for the homeless as a way to understand how even small things can make a big impact in others lives.
Each care package includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, a card made by the kids, and tucked into a plastic bag. Great work, kids!
Stay tuned next week for more oN the jkg afterschool blog!
Shalom, JKG Community!
Welcome back to the JKG Afterschool Community blog! We are finishing up Hachnasat Orchim (Welcoming Guests) with the students. The community learns and has the most fun by performing skits!
How do you welcome your guests? How do you create a warm and inviting space?
The students finished our Shalom sign this week! Everyone had a lot of fun creating the collage of Hebrew letters as a community. Long-term projects that continue over the days show how dedicated the students are to making our JKG space a true home away from home!
At JKG, we always want to create a positive space for all in many creative ways.
Hachnasat Orchim is always something to use in our everyday lives!
Playing outside and hanging out with a special JKG guest. Bob the puppet even came to say hi!
Is that..... rainbow challah? YUM! Can I have some?
Thanks for coming by TREES ATLANTA!
It's always a great time when our JKG friend Sabrina from Trees Atlanta stops by. She's really great at readings stories and creating a fun learning environment for all! There is always something to learn about our urban forest neighborhood. Our JKG community mixed dirt + paint to create epic drawings of trees, mountains, puppies and more!
Stay tuned next week for a new JKG blog post!
Welcome back! It’s been another great week with our JKG community! Students learned about the mitzvah of Hachnasat Orchim (Welcoming Guests) by discussing ways to make others feel welcome and comfortable. We also asked our JKG community to think about why it’s important to think of the feelings of others, and our responsibilities as hosts. They did great, of course!
Students also took a closer look at the bigger picture. We discussed ways to be welcoming to all different kinds of people, in different settings and situations: What is a real-life issue today that we can apply the concepts of Hachnasat Orchim to?
In honor of creating a welcoming space, we had a 4 team competition to clean up the JKG space! Kids were timed and given tasks in exchanged for one ticket at each station. They did a great job and had a lot of fun!
Hachnasat Orchim Welcome Collage - As a group, we will make a large “Welcome” collage that says Shalom! Each letter was given a specific color. We tore up old magazines to find colors for the collage. It’s going to be a great addition to our JKG space!
It was another great week with our Shinshiniot! They bring us great activities every Monday! We wish they could come everyday!
See you next week! From your friends at JKG!
One ridiculously cool JKG kid takes us through a week of L'shana Tova = Have a good year! We love celebrating Rosh Hashanah with our JKG Afterschool Community!
We had a wonderful last couple of weeks celebrating Rosh Hashanah! Our Hebrew word of the week was L’shana Tova, meaning “Have a good year!” Rosh Hashanah is a time to spend with family and friends and also a time to look back on the last year to make New Year’s resolutions!
What do you want to do better on in the New Year? Challenge yourself? Get better grades? Be kinder to your parents? You can do it!
We also have the great pleasure of having our Shinshiniot Israeli friends, Or and Lior, come by JKG to run activities every Monday! We played Rosh Hashanah games and made New Year’s cards for the Israeli soldiers! It was great to help another community at JKG!
We love the new board they designed so we can get to know our new friends better!
We love arts and crafts while we learn! The JKG community got together to paint our faces! We are cutting them out and hanging them up in the JKG building to represent our collective JKG community of friends!
Outside for Hebrew lessons? YES! Hebrew lessons are in full swing and these kids are rocking it! From letters to vowels, we always find fun ways to learn.
Check back next week to learn new phrases and keep up with our afterschool community!
One ridiculously cool JKG kid takes us through a week of love and kindness (gemilut chasadim) at the JKG Afterschool Community. Enjoy!
For the past couple of weeks at JKG we’ve continued to build and strengthen our קהילה (kehila, community). We also started our Hebrew lessons!
Check out the latest episode of JKG TV below!
What’s happening in Nishnushim (Hebrew word for snack)? All smiles! Now, pass the cucumbers, please!
The JKG community is loving the Hebrew Word of the Week! Each week, we introduce a new Hebrew word or phrase to JKG students that can be used in the classroom. We practice these words each day with silly skits and games. We love seeing the kids integrate the phrases into their normal routines!
Words of the week: מַיִם (mayim, water), תודה (todah, thank you), בבקשה (bevakasha, please/thank you), Ma shlomcha / Ma schlomech? (female/male versions of greeting someone)
This week we learned the phrase g'milut chasadim -- acts of love and kindness! Here at JKG, we always strive for a safe and open environment for everyone to share!
New porch swings! Can't get enough of them.
Trees Atlanta stopped by! We learned a lot about our urban tree community and how to contribute to its success. It’s always a good time to read “The Lorax” with friends! Caring for each other and the environment? That’s tikkun olam!
So much fun with planting! Can’t wait for the JKG garden!
Check back next week to learn new phrases and keep up with our community!
Happy Thursday! This week at JKG we're working to build and strengthen our קהילה (kehila, community). This year, in addition to our daily community-wide meetings at the beginning of the day, JKG students will break out into smaller groups to build a tighter kehila among peers. This week students were challenged to "The Newlyfriends" trivia game and a variety of team building games. It's going to be a great year!
New this year: Hebrew Word of the Week! Each week we introduce a new conversational word or phrase to JKG students that can be used in the classroom. We practice the words each day with silly skits, check it out!
Words of the week: מַיִם (mayim, water), תודה (todah, thank you), בבקשה (bevakasha, please/thank you)
World's Loudest Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament! With each out, the winner is cheered on by the people they defeated until everyone has played.
All Tangled Up! JKG students work together to free themselves.
Based on the classic "Newlyweds" game, students interviewed each other and were quizzed on how well they remembered their partner's details. Looks like we've got some new friends!
Check back next week to learn new phrases and keep up with our community!
שבת שלום (Shabbat Shalom!), JKG families! We have had a very exciting first week back at Afterschool--we're back and bigger than ever! Our students had an amazing time getting to know their new friends and our new spaces. As you can see, we've been jumping (dancing!) for joy these first few days!
Making fast friends and sealing the deal with bracelets!
JKG kids love the new playground space!
We knead challah! JKG Chefs preparing the dough for Shabbat.
Jake leads Hebrew fortune tellers--we reviewed Hebrew colors and some of the Aleph Bet on the different folds.
